Design Philosophy

Gil Mendez Design is dedicated to creating exceptionally beautiful home interiors that reflect the soul, delight the senses, and bring joy to the every day lives of the people who inhabit our work. A Puerto Rico native, Gil Mendez brings with him over seventeen years of design experience, most of which he attained while working for such notable industry icons as Paul Vincent Wiseman, Arthur Gensler, and Barbara Scavullo. Along with a Professional Bachelors of Architecture from Cornell University, he draws from an enviable collective body of work reflecting a most diverse range of project types and styles. He is most adept at orchestrating the perfect marriage between architecture, furnishings and decoration. Despite award winning successes while working on large commercial projects, Mr. Mendez has chosen to focus his efforts on producing designs for the residential sector for the better part of his professional career. This choice has afforded him the opportunity to better align his life’s work with his own strengths, enthusiasm and passion.

In 2006 Gil Mendez Design was launched with the sophisticated, residential client in mind as our efforts are directed exclusively at the creation of meticulously tailored, luxuriant residential interiors. All of our Clients, regardless of the scale of their project, benefit from the leadership of a seasoned creative talent, who pairs an experienced, discerning eye with enviable project delivery skills. While continually inspired by Mr. Mendez’s mind-broadening travel and a genuine love for life, our guiding principle is simple but based on an old adage learned from his very own grandmother, “Leave every place you visit better than it was before you arrived.”

Beyond the literal relevance of these words to the nature of our professional endeavors, this ethic is also applied to our own conduct and the manner in which we get work done; the relationships we sustain with our vendors and others working within the trade; our connection to other design professionals; the sustainability of materials and methods we employ in a project; and, (of key importance) our Client’s experience and quality of life from the time we enter a contract until long after our work is completed.

To impose a narrowly defined, iconographic style to our interior design projects would be in direct conflict with our goal to create uniquely individual and personally meaningful interiors. Instead, Gil Mendez Design brings a baseline, clear clean-cut contemporary consistency to every project that allows some rooms to be chic and elegant, while others are more inviting and relaxed. Each new interior is allowed to respond to programmatic needs and context while striking a stylistic balance based on the specific needs and desires of the people whom we serve. This philosophy allows us to integrate antiques and traditional elements into whimsical spaces as easily as we can incorporate stunningly beautiful furnishings into very livable, jovial settings.
